Article 43: Research published: Virtual Reality and Muscle Activation in Older Women

We are delighted to announce the publication of our research paper titled “Investigation of neuromuscular activation in older female adults during a dynamic and challenging virtual reality activity: A cross-sectional study” in the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology.

Highlights from the study:

  • Key insight: A significant increase in electromyography (EMG) amplitude was observed during a one-minute VR boxing activity, demonstrating that VR can effectively stimulate muscle activation.
  • Potential benefits: The study suggests VR’s potential to improve strength, balance, and overall physical activity among older populations, particularly for those who may find conventional exercise unappealing or difficult to access.
  • Impact: VR is shown to be a safe and engaging alternative to traditional exercise programs, with the potential to enhance health and reduce fall risks in elderly individuals.

This research, co-authored by Konstantina Intziegianni, Marc Sarens, Olia Tsivitanidou, Louis Nisiotis, Katalin Kovacs, Eniko Nagy, and Efstathios Christodoulides, opens new possibilities for integrating technology into strategies for healthy aging.
