VIBES Project connected Cypriot students with European peers through VR sports

As the Erasmus+ Sport VIBES Project enters its final phase, local partners have successfully completed its school pilot sessions in Cyprus. Organised by INQUIRY FUSE and the School of Sciences at UCLan Cyprus, the initiative rolled out five interactive Virtual Reality (VR) Physical Education sessions, introducing approximately 30 secondary school students to the future of sports pedagogy. Using standalone VR headsets, students trained and played Racket, an immersive virtual sport closely resembling padel tennis, keeping physical movement at the core of the experience.

The curriculum targeted complete physical and digital literacy across three main pillars: safely introducing VR hardware tracking, promoting physical fitness and team communication, and hosting multiplayer matches. This setup enabled a unique “non-formal internationalisation,” where young sports enthusiasts in Cyprus competed live against student teams in Belgium, Italy, and Portugal sharing a digital arena while remaining active in their own schools.

This scale of implementation relied on a strong local network. Project coordinators extend their warmest thanks to the educators and leadership at PASCAL Secondary School Larnaka and the historic Pancyprian Gymnasium for their active support and enthusiasm in bringing these pilots to life. Preliminary field data shows high student enjoyment, boosted motivation for gym class, and a better understanding of sports strategies.

While the project is wrapping up, all digital tools, open-access manuals, and lesson structures remain free to the public. Physical education teachers, school boards, and training organizations can download these resources at the official website: vibes-sports.eu.
