Article 143: Webinar “Virtual Reality, Cognition, and Performance: Implications for Sport and Physical Education.”

On 28 April 2026, Inquiry Fuse, in collaboration with UCLan Cyprus, hosted a webinar titled: “Virtual Reality, Cognition, and Performance: Implications for Sport and Physical Education.” Organised within the framework of the VIBES project, the session brought together educators, sports scientists, and technology enthusiasts to examine a fascinating question: How can VR improve the way we think and move?

The webinar was also led by Dr Marios Avraamides, a leading expert in the field, who guided participants through the cognitive benefits of immersive technology. The discussion moved beyond the “novelty” of Virtual Reality, focusing instead on how VR acts as a sophisticated tool to boost:

  • Perception and Attention: Training the brain to process complex environments more effectively.
  • Spatial Awareness: Developing a heightened sense of orientation and movement, crucial for both competitive sports and daily physical literacy.
  • Performance Optimisation: Utilising virtual environments to refine skills in a safe, controlled, and data-rich setting.

For us at INQUIRY FUSE, this event perfectly illustrated our mission to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application. By exploring the implications of VR for Physical Education, we continue to advocate for innovative pedagogical approaches that develop the scientific, physical, and digital literacies of the next generation.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where participants discussed the future of inclusive, digital-first physical activity. This synergy between sports science and emerging technologies remains a cornerstone of our work to drive societal and educational change through “body and mind.”

We would like to thank Dr Avraamides and all the participants who joined us online for this insightful exchange of knowledge. Discover more about the project’s mission: www.vibes-sports.eu.
