History has been written on 21 April 2026 at PASCAL Private English Secondary School in Larnaca. Within the framework of our project, VIBES (https://vibes-sports.eu/), we have witnessed an innovative milestone in the evolution of digital education and Physical Education: a live, cross-border Virtual Reality (VR) racket games event.
This initiative represents a brilliant synergy between INQUIRY FUSE, UCLan Cyprus, and PASCAL Secondary School. Together, we have successfully launched one of Europe’s first international school-based VR sports experiences, connecting secondary students from Cyprus and Belgium in a shared virtual arena, in coordination with Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Students who participated in this digital sports environment demonstrated that geographical distance was no longer a barrier to international collaboration, teamwork, and social connection. For Inquiry Fuse, this initiative reflected our mission of transforming educational research into meaningful societal and educational innovation.
This event highlighted our commitment to innovative Physical Education practices through the use of immersive VR technologies that modernise Physical Education and create engaging, motivating, and interactive sporting experiences for students. It also reflects our focus on inclusive participation, with VR providing accessible opportunities for students of diverse abilities and backgrounds to engage in movement-based activities. At the same time, the event strengthened European collaboration by connecting future citizens across the continent through technology-enhanced experiences that encourage intercultural exchange and cooperation. The project also supports the development of future-ready skills, including digital competence, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and problem-solving through experiential “body and mind” learning.
This friendly international VR event demonstrates how immersive technologies can enrich Physical Education lessons through increased student engagement, active participation, and new approaches to movement learning and sports activities. Current educational trends increasingly recognise the value of extended reality (XR), gamified learning environments, and immersive technologies in supporting student motivation and participation across the curriculum.
The VIBES initiative illustrates how schools can successfully integrate VR into Physical Education in ways that are collaborative, inclusive, and aligned with the future of education. Combining sport, immersive technology, and international interaction enables students to explore new forms of participation, creativity, and social engagement in an increasingly digital world.
We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to PASCAL Private English Secondary School and its teachers for their valuable collaboration, support, and commitment to making this innovative international VR experience a success.
