Can you learn Physics through shadow theatre? On Friday, November 28th, we proved that you definitely can.
We were thrilled to participate in this year’s STEAME FESTIVAL, organized by the Cyprus Mathematical Society and the THALES Foundation at Linopetra High School in Limassol. The energy at the school was incredible, with students, teachers, and researchers coming together to celebrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Bringing the L-STEAM project to life, we hosted a special workshop titled: “Lights, Shadows, Action!” – When shadow theatre meets physics.
The goal was simple yet powerful: to explore the properties of light not through a textbook, but through the art of storytelling.
We handed the students the tools of a director: hand-crafted cardboard figures, a simple cardboard box stage, a flashlight, and a choice of five creative scenarios.
From there, it was up to them. As they brought their stories to life, they naturally began to encounter the laws of physics. They had to experiment to solve visual problems:
- How does the shadow change when I move the flashlight closer?
- How can I make the figure look smaller?
By transforming a simple flashlight into a tool for scientific discovery, the students bridged the gap between the Arts and Science. A big thank you to the organizers for a fantastic event. We are already looking forward to the next one!
