Between the 25th and 29th of August, 2025, we joined the 16th Conference of the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) in Copenhagen, Denmark. Our Director, Dr. Olia Tsvitanidou, represented INQUIRIUM at this significant event, which brought together over 1,800 researchers from across the globe.
Dr. Tsvitanidou presented our interactive poster, “Opening possibilities for viewing and experiencing STEAM curricula in non-formal settings.” This work stems from our involvement in the Up-STEAM project, a fantastic collaboration with our valued partners at the University of Nicosia and the Insster Research Center.
Our research explores how the Design Thinking approach can transform non-formal STEAM learning into more inclusive and inquiry-driven experiences. Using the ‘Greening Your Space’ module as a case study, we showcased how teachers engaged in empathy-building activities, collaborative problem-solving, and creative approaches to ecology. Key takeaways from our pilot study highlighted that:
- Scaffolding questioning skills is crucial for supporting deeper student inquiry.
- The use of creative observation tools can spark fresh perspectives and curiosity.
- Non-formal settings provide unique and valuable opportunities for STEAM inclusion.
The ESERA conference is the largest European hub for science education researchers, and this year’s gathering was a vibrant forum for cutting-edge ideas. For INQUIRIUM, it was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, expand our professional network, and engage in meaningful discussions that will shape the future of our field.
We valued every conversation and look forward to continuing this journey of reimagining STEAM education for all learners. We are already looking forward to ESERA 2027, which will take place in Málaga, Spain!
