The L-STEAM project is an innovative project designed to address the growing global demand for professional skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). It aims to overcome significant challenges in STEAM education, such as developing inclusive curricula, evaluating innovative teaching methodologies, and transferring best practices to European education systems. These challenges are amplified by rigid subject boundaries and time constraints, which limit educators’ ability to engage students in integrated and inclusive STEAM activities. To tackle these issues, the project introduces a transdisciplinary approach combining Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE), open schooling, and creative pedagogies. This methodology uses performing arts as a medium to engage students with diverse learning styles, particularly emphasizing inclusion and diversity. Activities like theatre performances based on scientific concepts not only make STEM subjects more accessible—especially for girls and students with learning difficulties—but also foster key 21st-century skills such as leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurial thinking. The overarching aim of L-STEAM is to create a collaborative learning environment that brings together teachers, students, researchers, artists, businesses, and local communities. This environment will act as a hub for designing and implementing STEAM activities, ensuring active participation and engagement of all stakeholders.
The aim of the L-STEAM project is to produce a creative learning environment which will be the collaboration nucleus of different stakeholders such as teachers, students, researchers, artists, business, and local society.
The project’s main objectives (O) are:
O1: Develop a competence-based framework, the L-STEAM approach, to empower schools in designing and implementing STEAM activities.
O2: Develop mechanisms to support the implementation of the L-STEAM approach through specific STEAM activities in schools.
O3: Develop a series of scenarios of use of the proposed approach and involve schools in a series of STEAM activities. O4: Implement a systematic strategy to raise awareness of the project’s results and outcomes.
O4: Implement a systematic strategy to raise awareness of the project’s results and outcomes.
