Join Inquiry Fuse for a full-day Data Sonification & STEAM workshop where teenagers aged 13-16 discover the fascinating extraordinary connection between data, sound and creativity.

During five engaging hours, participants learn to interpret data like scientists and transform it into music like artists, exploring one of the most exciting intersections of technology, mathematics, artificial intelligence and creativity expression.

Working with real datasets, participants investigate how patterns, algorithms and visual graphs can be converted into sound and music. They explore key scientific concepts including data analysis, data visualisation, sound and vibration, and the mathematical structures that underpin both music and data. Using purpose-built AI music tools including Chrome Music Lab, Crayon AI, Suno and Google’s Magenta, participants experiment with how artificial intelligence generates music from data inputs before designing and presenting their own original data sonification projects.

Participants will:

• Analyse real-world datasets and identify patterns, trends and structures
• Create visual representations of data and explore what they reveal
• Investigate sound and vibration as forms of data communication
• Use AI-powered music tools to generate and experiment with data-driven compositions
• Explore how algorithms and machine learning influence modern music technology
• Design and present a data sonification project to the group

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of data, artificial intelligence and creative technologies, while developing skills in critical thinking, digital literacy and scientific inquiry.

This workshop demonstrates that data is far more than numbers on a screen. In the right hands, it can have rhythm, texture and even a voice.
